"The Horse Race" is a modern day adaptation of "Tian Ji's Horse Race," an allegorical tale first recorded by the historian Sima Qian. In the Chinese Kingdom of Qi, between 356 and 320 B.C., the king challenges a high ranking officer, Tian Ji, to a horse race. The competition highlights the issues of ethics and strategy that arise when a stronger opponent is pitted against a weaker one.
