Pocas personas han dejado una huella tan fuerte en la historia como Mohandas K. Gandhi, a quien el poeta Rabindranath Tagore otorgó el título de "Gran Alma" (Mahatma) y la India sigue teniendo como la "conciencia de la nación." Su acción no sólo cambió la India del siglo XX, sino que cantidad de grupos y personas (desde el Dalai Lama, pasando por Martin Luther King hasta Nelson Mandela) se han inspirado directamente en su pensamiento y práctica de la tolerancia y la no-violencia. A Gandhi le gustaba decir que su mensaje era su vida.
