Summary, etc |
Softball is a mental game, and it's never too soon to begin learning important mental game skills. Parents and coaches, help your young players develop a great mental game with this exciting book! Author and sport psychologist Dr. Curt Ickes wrote this book to better prepare 8-14-year-old softball players to play their best! He introduces players to sport psychology techniques usually reserved for older, more advanced athletes. The lessons are taught using concise and easy-to-understand language, through a fun, relatable, engaging story. Meet Ava, Zoe, Addie, and the other players on the Southport Sting. In this book, Zoe experiences struggles with anxiety and confidence like most young softball players do. Through Ava, a new friend on the team, Zoe discovers ways to quickly overcome anxiety, reset after mistakes, improve concentration, and increase confidence. It's a good thing, too, because the Southport Sting play against two very tough teams, the Calabash Cobras, and the Wilmington Wildcats. The Sting will need to be at their best! Slumps, self-doubt, anxiety, and struggles are part of the game of softball, especially for younger players. One bad performance can cause a player to predict future failure. It's this vicious spiral of negative experiences leading to negative thoughts which leads to more negative experiences. Well-meaning coaches and parents can tell our young player to 'Be confident' or 'Relax out there,' but this doesn't help much. Players need to discover the tools to develop the mindset, to play in the present and to win the next pitch rather than worrying about failure. This book teaches proven, easy-to-learn mental game skills to do just that! At the end of the book there is a review section so readers can actively recall what they read. Also, specific drills that improve mental game skills are included! |
