Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Working with producer Sturgill Simpson helped Lucette perform a complete reversal of direction on her second album, Deluxe Hotel Room. Cloaked in echo and anchored in electronics, Deluxe Hotel Room is a distinct sonic departure from Lucette's earthy, Dave Cobb-produced 2014 debut Black Is the Color. Shifting perspectives as it changes colors, Deluxe Hotel Room is proudly, almost defiantly urban; the songs are concerned with a decaying relationship and the production is sophisticated, purposely blurring lines between styles and eras. At their core, many of the songs aren't far removed from the material from Black Is the Color: there are hints of soul and gospel, not to mention country-folk. What distinguishes Deluxe Hotel Room is the execution, which can cast even its simplest songs out into space. Case in point is "Crazy Bird." Opening with an ominous synthesized drone straight out of The Shining, the song settles into a country lullaby, and it's not the only song that performs that trick: "Out of the Rain" sways like a '50s slow dance but its electronic arrangement makes it sound uneasy, "Full Moon Town" throbs to a neon beat that masks its lean country-rock foundation, and "California" plays like a sly homage to Lana Del Rey. Through it all, Lucette's dusky voice gives the eeriness a human heart, providing a focal point through the darkness. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
