Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:
Will Kimbrough spent much of the 2010s focusing on things other than his own solo career. After a half-decade of collaboration consisting of writing, producing and gigging, including in the bands Willie Sugarcapps and Daddy, he hunkered down and cut I Like It Down Here, a burnished and weathered album that benefits from his recent journeys. What's striking from the moment "Hey Trouble" -- not a rocker, but a vaguely bittersweet sigh of jangle-pop -- kicks off the album is how relaxed Kimbrough sounds. He's not wallowing in sadness, but rather letting the music flow easy, an attribute that helps deliver dark moments (the nervy protest song "Alabama (For Michael Donald)," the spooky "Buddha Blues") as well as light. Kimbrough's ease is that of a veteran musician, one who knows enough not to hurry or hit his points too hard. This light touch results in an alluring slow-burner of an album built upon a clutch of songs that slowly creep into the subconscious. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
