The 40th Anniversary special edition includes an introduction by Jacqueline Woodson, and author's notes and a "Logan family tree" before the text. Following the text is "Mildred D. Taylor's family album" including some of the author's family photographs. The text of the novel is otherwise identical to the original edition.
