The modern state of Israel was born in 1948. Benjamin Netanyahu was born the following year. His parents nicknamed him Bibi, and to this day, Israelis call him by that name. As Bibi matured, so did Israel. Bibi would play a central role in developing and strengthening the country. As a soldier, he served in the most secret commando unit of the Israeli Defense Forces. As a diplomat he would make Israel's case before the world. As Minister of the Treasury he would help build Israel's high-tech economy. And as Prime Minister he would lead his country to peace through strength. His sense of mission was also personal: he felt driven to carry on the work of his brave brother, who fell in a daring military operation that saved the lives of Jewish hostages from the clutches of terrorists.
