N2  - When we think of women in the military, we tend to think of the modern day soldier in her fatigues and combat boots. We tend to forget that we had women in the military a hundred years ago. Then they wore an entirely different uniform: the uniform of a nurse. The 225 women who tell their own stories here enlisted in the first World War from the state of North Dakota. Fifty-five of those were recent immigrants. They all put their lives at risk to comfort and heal the sick and wounded in hospital throughout the United States as well as near the front lines in Europe. They not only cared for wounded and dying soldiers but those from all walks of life struck down by the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918
