Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:
There's a wonderfully mellow quality to African music that makes it perfect for lullabies. The music here might be from all over the continent, from Cape Verde to South Africa and Somalia, but every track shares that soft, lulling quality. There are plenty of big names here, like Ladysmith Black Mambazo with a gorgeously delicate take on "Wimoweh," and Angélique Kidjo turning jazzy. The collection doesn't consist entirely of songs, by any means: the great Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté work their instrumental magic on "Simbo," and Virginia Mukwesha is hypnotic on the mbira (thumb piano) -- she also has the entire bonus disc devoted to her work. Saba offers a subdued take on the traditional "Huwaiahuwa," a song that has almost Celtic cadences for a truly international feel. Kora player Ba Cissoko uses his instrument to wonderful effect on "Manssani," with rippling splashes of notes and gorgeous tones from a second, electric kora. It's perhaps apt that the disc should conclude with Miriam Makeba, Mama Africa herself, with the 1974 love song "Malaika," to give everyone good dreams. ~ Chris Nickson
Bonus disc by Virginia Mukwesha is titled The power of Mbira.
