En 1928, Alejo Carpentier abandono cuba con destino a Francia, despues de haber sido encarcelado durante siete meses por la dictadura de Gerardo Machado, bajo los cargos de propagar ideas comunistas. En Francia se convierte en mediador entre dos mundos, por una parte se mantiene atento a los asuntos de Cuba y por otra se sumerge en la Vanguardia europea y afirma en ella sus inquietudes artísticas. Es en este contexto que Carpentier establece con su madre un circuito epistolar que con deleite se presentan en este libro, recopilación que comienza en 1926 con una pequeña nota y sigue con el fujo de cartas desde 1928 a 1937, donde le muestra a su madre sus inquietudes, enojos, nostalgias y anhelos.
